Boosting Rail Safety in Hong Kong

The railway inspection system will enhance rail network reliability and safety. It can detect cracks as small as few millimetres and instant capture high-resolution images to the operator in real time.
Jebsen & Jessen Technology - Industrial Services won the tender from Hong Kong’s metro operator, MTR, to supply and install railway inspection systems for five passenger trains built by state-owned enterprise, CNR Changchun Railway Vehicles Company.
Commenting on the award, Jeremy Chee, Regional Director said: “Our first project with Hong Kong’s MTR was a train wash plant back in 2012. Our value-added services and advanced technology support were key to winning this project amid strong competition. Both Singapore and Hong Kong will continue to be strategically important for us to expand our railway engineering business in the region.”
Working closely with technology partner bvSys, the project is targeted for commissioning over two phases in 2015 and 2017. The system includes high-resolution image capturing and processing capabilities that can automatically inspect the conditions of the rail tracks along Hong Kong’s 7.3km South Island Line and 56km rail line that forms the East-West Corridor.
The system will significantly enhance rail network reliability and safety because cracks as small as a few millimetres can be accurately detected. When any defects are detected, the system sends an alarm wirelessly, including a photo with location details, to the metro operator in real time.
